Allan was born on April 15, 1944, in Minneota to Jens Ludwig Dovre and Orieanna (Orie) Theressa (Severson) Dovre. He graduated from Minneota High School in 1962. He attended Augustana college for 1 year and then transferred to South Dakota State University where he carpooled home with his future wife, Rita Willgohs. He graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy.

In 1966, Allan was drafted into the United States Army and served his country in Vietnam as a Specialist in the 5th Battalion, 242nd Maintenance Detachment, posted first to Can Tho and then to Long Xuyen and worked as a Power Generation Equipment Operator. He taught English in his free time. He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, and a Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

After he fulfilled his commitment to the army, Allan and Rita were married on September 28, 1968, at Hope Lutheran Church, Minneota, Minnesota, and began farming just a mile from its doors.

Religious life was important to Allan. He was an active member of Hope Lutheran his entire life: baptized, confirmed, and married in the church for which his father dug the footings. He served on the church council, call committee, and cemetery board; taught Sunday School; attended Bible study; volunteered at countless events; and sang in the choir for over fifty years.

Active in the Minneota community, Allan was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, Rotary, the Round Up, and was a charter member of the Jaycees. He served on the Minneota School Board in the 1980s and delivered Meals on Wheels until shortly before his death.

Allan enjoyed fishing, reading, going to the movies, spending time with his family, and caring for the communities to which he belonged. He was kind and generous and lived by God’s instruction to love his neighbor. His definition of “neighbor” was expansive.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Cheryl. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita Dovre; his daughter, Sara (Mahadev) Dovre Wudali, of Saint Paul; his son, David (Paula) Dovre, of Minneota; four grandchildren: Aditya, Ila, Autumn, and Dawson; his sister Janice (Ron) Nelson of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; his sister-in-law Faye (Jim) Kluttz of Fredrick, Maryland; five nieces and nephews: Ann Mittlestadt, Eric Nelson, Erin (Chris) Rollette, Kristen (Joe) Pinto, Jeff (Tara) Kluttz; and ten grand-nieces and nephews: Amanda, Katrina, Abigail, Joseph, Andrew, Elaina, Lauren, Elizabeth, Alexandra, and Olivia.
