Charlotte Grow

MARSHALL–Charlotte Grow, age 105, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center with family be her side. A Prayer Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall, Minnesota. Following interment at the Marshall Cemetery, a reception will be held back at Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of her service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025. Charlotte Neva Grow was born February 4, 1920, in Gresham, Nebraska, to Harry and Cora (Johnston) VanHoosen. Harry was so happy he finally got his little girl. Shortly after Charlotte’s birth, her family moved to North Loup, Nebraska, and as the Depression started, Charlotte’s family was forced to have a farm sale where they had to sell everything, losing the farm. As the family moved around and lived in various towns, Charlotte graduated from North Loup High School in 1936 at 16 years old; she was the youngest student in her class. She later attended business college in Grand Island. However, Charlotte was not able to graduate from business college because her family moved to California to help with WWII efforts. They worked for Convair on the B-24 aircraft. Charlotte recalled working in the aircraft factory for 85¢ an hour as a spot welder – the real Rosie the Riveter!

Charlotte met the love of her life, Ronald Grow, at a dance and they later married on November 15, 1942, in San Diego, California. Ronald was stationed at the Navy base in San Diego. Charlotte and Ronny had one son, Bruce. As a flagman on battleships, Ronny’s military career led them around the US with stations in California, Arkansas, and Texas. They landed in Marshall, Minnesota, in the 1940s and called Marshall home ever since.

Charlotte had an outgoing personality and worked most of her life in retail businesses, namely Ben Franklin and Sears Roebuck & Company – every appliance she owned had to come from Sears. Charlotte retired in 1984 after 31 years at Sears.

Charlotte was a member of the Eagles Club, American Legion, and VFW. She held many positions while an Eagle member, serving as the 13th President of the Marshall (MN) Eagles Auxiliary. Her hobbies included dancing, traveling, making scrapbooks of all of her travels and the Eagles’ Auxiliary adventures, and watching figure skating. She even had the opportunity to attend ice skating shows and saw some of her favorite skaters perform. Charlotte was the Minnesota Twins biggest fan! Charlotte loved to dance and is proud of her accomplishment of learning to waltz at just 4 years old. She had the best teacher – her pop. Charlotte belonged to TOPS for many years and was also a member of the Silver Foxes exercise group. Charlotte LOVED flowers and if they were purple, that was even better. She recalled travel memories including trips to almost all 50 states (and she has postcards to prove it), a cruise to the Bahamas, and a bucket list trip to Nova Scotia that her son Bruce and grandchildren Jeff and Sheila gave to her as a Christmas gift. Another highlight was a road trip she and her granddaughter, Sheila, took to Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee.

Charlotte was part of many generational pictures the family holds dear to their hearts. The age range between Charlotte and her great-great-granddaughters spans over 100 years! She is survived by her granddaughter, Sheila (Jeff) Drum of Marshall; great-grandson Cody (Meghan Lozinski) Drum with great-great-granddaughters, Charlotte “Lottie” and Frances “Fenna” of Duluth; great-grandson, Zachary Drum (Brittney Ormberg) with great-great-granddaughter, Violet of Marshall; and many relatives from the VanHoosen and Marshall families from various towns in Nebraska.

Charlotte is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Grow; son, Bruce Grow; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Grow; brother, Cecil VanHoosen; and many nieces and nephews from the great state of Nebraska.
