Richard “Dick” Welu

KINGWOOD, TX – Memorial for Richard “Dick” Welu, 76, formerly of Milroy, will take place at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at Woodridge Baptist Church in Kingwood, TX. Dick’s ashes will be buried at a later time at the Techumseh Cemetary in Shawnee, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Woodridge Baptist Church in Kingwood, TX towards the new gym project.
Richard John Welu was born in Tracy, Minnesota on December 10, 1948 and went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2025. He was the oldest of five children to Howard and Arlene (Frank) Welu living in the farming community. Dick graduated from Milroy High School and went on to Mankato State College to pursue his BS Degree in Accounting. The week after graduating he received his draft notice. Dick then enlisted in the Army and after Basic Training he received orders to go to Vietnam. Prayers were answered and then his orders were changed to go to Germany.
After the Army Dick attended college to be an accountant and started his career in the cities. There he met his first wife Lucy and to this union son Jonathan Welu was born along with the adoption of Lucy’s daughter Carin. The family moved to Texas where later Lucy passed away.
While in Texas Dick worked for Baker Hughes for 34 years. He loved to travel and this gave him the opportunity to travel around the world. In Texas was where Dick met the love of his life Martha who is known as “Honeybun” to Dick. With this union Dick also gained two more daughters of Martha’s, Lorraine and Rebecca. Dick and Martha enjoyed dancing, playing cards and most of all going on cruises. Together they did 24 cruises and their longest cruise was 40 days. This cruise took them to Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Hawaii and more.
Dick became a born again Chistian and he and Martha taught 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday School for 11 years at the First Baptist Church. Now they are members of Woodridge Baptist Church in Kingwood, TX.
Dick also enjoyed getting together with his family and being a jokester and showing up with his Teddy Bear smile. He was known as “The Hawk” to his brothers and they were his “Wings”. As the brothers quoted “The Hawk has flown to a better place”. Besides family Dick also enjoyed getting together with his classmates at the Milroy reunions.
Dick passed away on May 7, 2025 after a long battle with Parkinson’s & Lewy Body Dementia. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Martha Welu of Kingwood, TX and daughters Carin Kelly of Sugarland, TX, Lorraine Murphy and her husband Jay Groot of Magnolia, TX, Rebecca Richardson of Edmond, OK and son, Jonathan Welu of Canada. Brother, Steve Welu and his wife Diane of Fishers, IN and Brother Robert (Bob) Welu and his wife Nina of Madison Lake, MN and Sister Lori Johnson and her husband Tim of Apple Valley, MN and Sister Mary Jo Wartner and her husband Jeff of Milroy, MN and many cherished Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Howard and Arlene Welu along with his first wife Lucille Marie Welu.
