Robert William Meyer (Bob)

April 8, 1945-Feb. 9, 2025

EAU CLAIRE, WI–Robert William Meyer (Bob), age 79, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025. He was born April 8, 1945 in Sumner, Iowa; a son of Bill and Ruth (Borcherding) Meyer.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree (Iowa State) in wildlife management and his masters (University of Maine) in forestry, Bob dedicated his working career to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, where he worked as an environmental biologist and wildlife conservationist for over 40 years in Marshall, MN; accomplishing such projects as the restoration of Black Rush Lake in Lyon County.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting duck, pheasant, grouse and turkey and going trout fishing. When he wasn’t outdoors, he was often reading a monthly magazine about hunting or fishing, or a new political thriller or crime fiction novel.

After retiring from the DNR, Bob and his wife relocated to rural Wisconsin to be closer to their grandchildren. It was shortly after that in 2013 that Bob was diagnosed with cancer, Multiple Myeloma. Having retired within the last year, he fought the chemotherapy and the stem cell transplant and won as good as anyone can. Although he missed the pheasant opener that year for the first time since he could carry a shotgun (probably), he didn’t miss the next one.

Bob will be remembered as a loving, caring, and patient father and grandfather; often quiet but always present. He will be remembered as a hard worker who cared deeply for the environment, and shared that love with his colleagues, neighbors, friends, and family. He saw the good in everyone and in everything. Bob leaves behind a legacy of compassion for both humans and nature.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Meyer, children Melanie Anderson (Bryce) and Ryan Meyer (Carrie) and his grandchildren Finn, Everett, and Micah, and his brother Chuck (Ria).

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 23, 2025 at West Chapel Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home (1405 N. Clairemont Avenue, Eau Claire, WI). The family will greet relatives and friends at the West Chapel from 1:30 – 2:00 PM on Friday. Following the service, coffee and desserts will be served.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to such organizations as the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, Nature Conservancy or some other environmental agency.
