Robert “Bob” Eugene Gruber

VICTORIA–Robert “Bob” Eugene Gruber passed away peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2025, at his home in Victoria, Minnesota. He was born in Oakland, California on September 22, 1945, and led a remarkable life filled with dedication to his country, family and the outdoors.

Gruber served honorably in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant during his two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery and heroism, saving all the men in his platoon in a combat zone. Sgt. Gruber was also awarded two Purple Hearts for his sacrifice after being wounded in enemy action.

Bob was raised in Mankato where he attended school and met his wife Joanne (Kajer) Gruber. He worked for many years in management for both Happy Chef Restaurants and The Schwan’s Food Company in Marshall, Minnesota where Bob and Jo raised their two daughters. In addition to work, Bob was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting with a labrador by his side, and fishing muskie.

Above all, his family came first. 53 years of love and devotion to Jo could be seen and felt by anyone who knew him. His daughters and grandchildren filled his life with love and laughter, whether it was playing cards, blazing a trail, or enjoying the beauty of a full moon.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Noreen Gruber. He is survived by his wife Jo, daughters Amy (Troy) Bloch and Anne (Andrew) Wittenborg and grandchildren Caitlyn Bloch and Will Wittenborg. He is also survived by his sister Judy Shores (Nick Betancort) as well as 4 nieces and 1 nephew.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20th at St. Victoria Catholic Church (8228 Victoria Drive) with Father Bob White as Celebrant of the Mass. Visitation 1 hour prior to the Mass. Luncheon to follow. A private burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital to support families during their cancer journey.
