Larry Neal Mortland

Larry Neal Mortland was born on June 17, 1942 to Neal and Louise (Nihart) Mortland in Tyler, Minnesota. Larry grew up on the Arco family farm. He was baptized, received his first communion, and was confirmed in the Catholic faith. Growing up, Larry worked on the family farm and did chores for many of the neighbors when needed. Larry attended the Arco Public School in Arco, Minnesota until ninth grade and then Ivanhoe High School in Ivanhoe, Minnesota, graduating in 1961. Soon after, he joined the Army National Guard. He received his honorable discharge in 1967 as a SGT E5 rank. After high school, Larry joined John Fredericksen in the construction business.

On July 8, 1962, Larry was united in marriage to Darlene Van Overbeke at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. This union was blessed with two sons and 53 years of life together. The same year they were married, Larry started his own construction company. From 1963 to 1972 they resided in Tyler where they had built and lived in their new house. They moved back to the farm in 1972 after his father’s death. In 2016, Darlene preceded him in death. After 56 years of owning his own business and farming, he retired in 2018. On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Larry passed away at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 82 years, 10 months, and 23 days.

Larry was a member of St. Dionysius Catholic Church in Tyler, Minnesota.

Larry is survived by his two sons, Kevin Mortland of Arco, Minnesota, and Randy (Margo) Mortland of Elkton, South Dakota; granddaughter, Emma; siblings, Gail (Murray) Mortland of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jean (Leanard) Popowski of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, Gerald (Darlene) Mortland of Cambridge, Minnesota, and Nick (Nancy) Mortland of Arco. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; parents, Neal and Louise Mortland; sister, Joyce (Jerry) Wonsewicz; nephew, Travis Yotter; brothers-in-law, Dean Van Overbeke and Dean Gacke; and his father- and mother-in-law, Edwin and Bernice Van Overbeke.
