Cornelius “Corny” Smit

June 18, 1940 – April 11, 2025

ABERDEEN, SD–Cornelius “Corny” Smit, 84, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.

A private burial was held at the Wilmot Cemetery in Wilmot, SD.

Born on June 18, 1940, in Ortonville, Minnesota, to Kurt and Elsa (Dockter) Smit, Corny grew up in South Dakota and graduated from Corona High School. He proudly played in the South Dakota High School State B Basketball Championship games in both 1957 and 1958.

On August 5, 1962, he married the love of his life, Sandra Rose Barlund, with whom he shared a beautiful journey of over six decades.

Corny dedicated his life to education, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in various school districts across southwestern Minnesota. His commitment to student success and educational excellence earned him recognition throughout the region. Under his leadership, several schools achieved improved academic performance and community engagement.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra; his daughter, Kari Harrison (Smit), and his son, Timothy Smit; his beloved grandchildren, Jackson, Estelle, Austin, Gabe, and Ayla Elsa; his cherished great-grandchildren, Aurelius, Kaceton, and Landyn; his brother, Roland Smit; and his sister, Carol Ackerman. Cornelius was also a treasured father-in-law to Kari’s husband, Steve, and Timothy’s wife, Heather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kurt and Elsa Smit, and two infant daughters.
