Lorraine Thompson

Sept. 11, 1953-June 10, 2023

Lorraine Ann Thompson, 69, of Rapid City, SD passed away June 10, 2023, at Monument Hospital Comfort Care in Rapid City, SD.

She was born Sept. 11, 1953, on the family farm, in Echo, to Lawrence and Mildred (Aaresth) Slettedahl. She was the youngest of their 13 children and was affectionately called "Honey" by her family. Lorraine grew up on the family farm and learned all the skills a farm girl needed to make it in life. She graduated from Wood Lake High School in 1971 and briefly attended Granite Tech, in Granite Falls, MN.

Lorraine married David Thompson on May 27, 1972, at Rock Valle Lutheran Church in Echo. They lived briefly in Cottonwood, before moving to Rapid City, SD shortly after the birth of their son.

Lorraine was a stay-at-home mom for much of her life. She used that time to teach her children all that she had learned on the farm, and she knew and passed on a lot. At the age of 39 she decided to pursue her dream of going back to school and graduated from Western Dakota Tech with a Pharmacy Technician degree in 1994. She worked all her second career at the West-side FTC express pharmacy before retiring in 2013.

Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She enjoyed teaching them how to bake cookies, which was a talent of hers. Her Christmas cookies were always exceptional. Lefse was another art she passed onto her kids and grandkids, sharing her love of her Norwegian heritage. Her potato balls were to die for but were even better the next day fried with eggs for breakfast. Uf-dah! Lorraine loved to garden and canning her harvests, keeping up the traditions she learned as a child.

She is survived by her husband David Thompson, Rapid City, SD. Son Phillip (Teresa) Thompson, Piedmont, SD. daughters Jeanette (Jayme) Yellow Thunder, Box Elder, SD and Katy (Craig) Visscher, Rapid City, SD, grandchildren: Kevin (Amanda), Laura, Rachel, Ben, Jacob, Emily, Nathan, Sienna, Crimson, and Ellie, siblings: Milly Bruss, St. Anthony, Bob (Karla) Slettedahl, Granite Falls, George Slettedahl, Cottonwood, and Dave (Carol) Slettedahl, Wood Lake, bonus daughters Dawn Nolen and Chris Mayle.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Mildred Slettedahl; brothers: Lars, Kenneth, James, Lawrence Jr., Dale, sisters: Shirley, Corrine, and Barbara.

A memorial service is set for Wednesday, June 21 at 10 a.m. at Kirk Funeral Home (livestream available).

She will be forever loved and remembered. We do appreciate your love and support during this difficult time.
