John Fischer

MARSHALL — Mass of Christian Burial for John Wallace “Wally” Fischer, 91, of Marshall, will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall.  Visitation will be at 5-7 p.m. Tuesday with a CCW Rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall.  Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Remembrance Center.  Interment will take place at St Eloi Catholic Cemetery in Ghent.

John Wallace Fischer was born on Aug. 17, 1930, in Lynd Township to William and Rose (Zwach) Fischer.  He graduated from the Lynd Public School in 1948 and was a member of the 1946 Lynd State Tournament Basketball Team.  He also played on the Lynd baseball team.  After high school, he farmed on the family farm until drafted into the army in 1952.  Wally served in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1954.  He returned to the family farm where he was a grain farmer and fed Black Angus cattle until he retired.  In 1960, he married Jane Canavan at the Corpus Christie Catholic Church in Ft. Dodge Iowa.  Wally was an avid sports fan and was passionate about his family.

Wally died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.  He is survived by his wife, Jane, of Marshall, son William (and Bonna) Fischer and their two children Zach and Sam; son John (and Mary) Fischer and their three children Thomas, Issac, and Claire.  He is also survived by his deceased son Joseph’s children Matthew, William, Emmett, Thor, Sophia, and Cora, and Angela, his deceased son’s wife, brother William “Casper” Fischer (died Aug. 6), Barbara Kerr, Rita Giesler, Charles (Bernice) Fischer and Rosemary (Don) Bot.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son Joseph in 2005, daughter Mary in 2020, two infant sons, brother Robert “Buck” Fischer, and brothers-in-law Duane Kerr and Carroll Giesler.

Memorials preferred to Holy Redeemer Catholic School or the Avera Marshall Cancer Center.
