Elenora Pope

June 3, 1931-May 2, 2021

MARSHALL — Private funeral services for Elenora “Ellie” Pope, 89, of Marshall and formerly of Lynd, are scheduled for Thursday at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. A live stream link will be available starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday.  Interment will be in the Lynd City Cemetery.

She passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.

Elenora June DeVries was born June 3, 1931, to Tom and Marie (Kor) DeVries in White, South Dakota. She attended country school and Ellie was a 1949 graduate of Russell High School.

On Oct. 20, 1951, Ellie was united in marriage to Brandt Pope at the Balaton United Methodist Church. To this union, three children were born: Kendall, Kelvin, and Kathy. The family made their home in Lynd, Balaton, Tracy, Slayton, before again settling in Lynd. When they needed more assistance with their care, Ellie and Brandt moved into Hill Street Place in Marshall. This October, the couple would have been celebrating an amazing 70 years of marriage together.

Ellie worked as a cashier the Red Owl Grocery Store in Marshall before keeping the books at various locations around the area including: the Balaton Farmer’s Co-Op, Massey-Ferguson Manufacturing in Slayton, and the Iona Elevator before retiring in 1995.

Ellie had many different hobbies throughout her lifetime. In her younger years, she enjoyed dancing and roller skating, and during her later years, she enjoyed being a grandmother, gardening her elaborate flower beds, crocheting, circle word puzzles, and watching birds and wildlife in her back yard. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and feeding her loved ones; Ellie always had food ready, and one would never leave her house hungry.
