Patricia Haneca

Sept. 10, 1948-Dec. 25, 2020

WOOD LAKE — A private family funeral service for Patricia “Pat” Haneca, 72, of Wood Lake will be at the Horvath Remembrance Center.

Pat passed away Friday, Dec. 25, 2020, at the Prairie Home Hospice Lockwood House in Marshall.

Pat was born on Sept. 10, 1948, to Willard and Esther (Flan) Holmberg. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Cottonwood and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1966. Pat worked in Minneapolis for a short time after graduation. She married Richard Haneca on April 23, 1967 at St. Mary’s Church in Cottonwood. They moved to Minot, ND, because Richard was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. In 1968, he was stationed in Germany and they lived there until moving back to Wood Lake in 1970. They came back and worked on the family farm where Pat helped Richard with livestock, working in the fields, and raising her family. Pat eventually went to work at the Wood Lake grocery store. She purchased the store in 1992 and ran a successful business that provided an important landmark for the small town’s residents. She retired in 2015. Pat was very involved in the Wood Lake American Legion Auxiliary, belonged to a bowling league for years, and helped train young minds at St. Mary’s Church. She spent many rewarding hours working with Yellow Medicine County Restorative Justice. Pat always liked having extra kids around the house. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens. She spent hours on knitting, sewing and craft projects and doing puzzles. She and her family enjoyed weekend camping.

Pat and Richard were blessed with three children: Kent (and Laura) Haneca of Wood Lake, Tony (and Kelly) Haneca of Moorhead, and Stacy (and Josh) Anstice of Cross Plains, WI.

Pat is survived by her husband and loving caregiver, Richard Haneca, children Kent, Tony and Stacy, siblings Mavis Kalk, Richard (and Vickie) Holmberg, Becky Sorbel (Brian Osborn) and Kari Holmberg (Don Burger), mother-in-law Margaret Haneca, brothers-in-law Larry (Pat), Dariel (Anna Marie), Ray (Donna) and Darwin Haneca and sister-in-law Jolene (Walker) Haneca. Also survived by her grandchildren Irelyn, Harlie, Riley, Ashlan, Ella Jo and great-grandchildren Sophia and Asher, step-grandchildren Stephanie, Troy, Haley and Andrew. She was preceded in death by her parents Willard and Esther Holmberg, brother-in-law Bill Kalk, one infant grandson Caden Danz, father-in-law Joe Haneca and sister-in-law Heidi Haneca. These were the special people in her life. Pat lived a very full and rich life. Blessed Be Her Memory.
