James John

MARSHALL – Mass of Christian Burial for James “Jim” John, 84, of Marshall, will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. A visitation walk through will be from 12:30- 1:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Jim died Thursday, June 4, 2020, at his residence in Marshall.

James Sebastian John was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1935, in St. Kilian, MN, to William and Olivia (Einck) John. Jim grew up on a farm near St. Kilian. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. On Feb. 14, 1957, he was united in marriage to Anna Voss at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Fulda. To this union were born daughters Catherine, Carol and Cynthia. Jim attended the Elgin Watch College in Elgin, IL, to study watchmaking and gemology. Jim worked as a watchmaker/jeweler for Lorenz Jewelry, Herreid’s Jewelry in Luverne and Skewes Jewelry in Marshall. He enjoyed woodworking and loved to add his special touch to all of his creations. He also enjoyed remodeling his home and lake cabin, bowling, playing golf, camping and spending time at the lake. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, and participated with their honor guard for funerals and other special events. Jim will be remembered for his infectious laugh and fun-loving nature. He was humble, yet thoughtful and generous. His girls were the joy of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Marshall; daughter Carol (and Dean) Rice of Andover, daughter Cynthia (and Steve) Larson of Vesta; grandchildren Britta (and Clay) Sharkey of Mankato, David, Olivia, Jordan Rice of Andover; great-grandchildren Elena and Cade; siblings Alvin (and Verneice) John of Lismore, Bill (and Peg) John of Chanhassen, Mary Jane (and Rich) Entwisle of Brandon, S.D., sister-in-law Elaine John of Adrian; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Catherine on Oct. 27, 1980, brothers Linus (and Ronnie), Lawrence (and Maxine), Edward, and nephews Mike John, Jeff John, and Jake Peters.

Thank you for your kindness and condolences. No thank you notes will be mailed out. A donation will be made to Prairie Home Hospice for postage saved.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Knights of Columbus Seminary Fund, MCCL, or the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Foundation.
