Marietta Stegner

Marietta died peacefully in her sleep on May 14, 2020, at the age of 99.

Marietta Garnet Thies was born Sept. 22, 1920, to Lallie and Hulda Thies in Drammen Township, Lincoln County. As a child she grew up on a farm near Hendricks. She graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1938 with honors. Her formal education paled in comparison to what she learned from her parents whom she cherished. Following high school she got her teachersí certificate. Marietta enjoyed teaching in rural schools for 4 1/2 years.

On June 13, 1943, Marietta was united in marriage to Fred R. Steele. They made their home in Garden City, S.D. She enjoyed being a farmer’s wife. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Sheldon. They moved to Hendricks area where they farmed and raised their son.

Marietta loved the written word. She scrapbooked before scrapbooking was a thing. Many meaningful mementos of newspaper clippings, articles, and poems were saved. A favorite “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.” Philippians 1:3.
