Donald Maeyaert

March 18, 1929-March 10, 2019

MARSHALL — Mass of Christian Burial for Donald “Don” Maeyaert, 89, of Marshall, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday with a CCW rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at Rehkamp Horvath Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will continue from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall.

Don died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, March 10, 2019, just shy of his 90th birthday, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.

Donald Francis Maeyaert was born March 18, 1929, in Tracy to Rene and Bernice (Tiemessen) Maeyaert. Growing up, he lived with his family on farms near Tracy and Minneota before moving to a farm near Marshall. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1947. Don enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned home On June 10, 1958, he was united in marriage to Donna Van Keulen at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. The couple farmed and raised their family near Minneota until moving to Marshall in 1989. Don was passionate about his faith and was an active member of St. Eloi Catholic Church and later Holy Redeemer. He volunteered at the Hospital Thrift Shop, Food Shelf, Heart to Heart program, and delivered Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed wood working, spending time at the Marshall Adult Community Center and playing cards. Don had the very special experience of taking an Honor Flight in September of 2018. Don always enjoyed farming, helping out even after retirement. He especially enjoyed helping his sons Doug and Dan with combining. He cherished time with family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and dry wit.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Marshall; children Deb (and Lee) Lindahl of Blaine, Doug (and Shirley) Maeyaert of Minneota, Dan (and Shari) Maeyaert of Minneota, Denise (and Bob) Piszczor of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren Lisa (and Saben) DeSmet, Ross (and Kelly) Lindahl, Nicole (and Brad) Tombers, Cody (and Mikayla) Lindahl, Ashley Lindahl (and fiancé Nick Cook) Mark (and Micaela) Maeyaert, Jonathan Maeyaert, Sara (and Connor) Haken, Krista Maeyaert, Kayla Maeyaert and Kelsey Maeyaert; great-grandchildren: William, Kennedy, Emma, Fayth, Grayson, Ryker, Leroy and Jase; siblings Rita LaVoy, Ruth (and Larry) Erickson, Francis (and Judy) Maeyaert; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister Dorothy (and Earl) Maertens, brother David (and Jeannie) Maeyaert and brother-in-law Harold LaVoy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Avera Morningside Heights, Birthright of Marshall, Holy Redeemer or St. Eloi Catholic Church.
