Jerry Varpness

NEWTON, Kan. — Services for Jerry Varpness, 69, of Newton, Kan., will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church 1000 15th Ave. in Clarkfield.

He died Nov. 16, 2018.

Jerry Varpness was born Feb. 17, 1949, in Clarkfield to Delmar and Marion Varpness. Jerry grew up in Clarkfield and went to school there. He was raised with three siblings: Duane, Wesley, and David Varpness.

In 1967 he was united in marriage to Donna Neuman. They shared five children together, Stacy Varpness, Sherry Wyffels, Shannon Varpness, Shawn Varpness and Stephanie Lang.

Jerry was employed at the Cheese Plant in Clarkfield, Cattoor Oil Company and Nutrena Feeds in his early years. He was self-employed for a short time farming as well. In 1978 he began driving truck for Floyd Wild Trucking in Marshall which became his lifelong career. Jerry continued driving for Floyd Wild and A & A Express in Brandon, S.D., the next 40 years.

In 1997 Jerry was united in marriage with Mary Lou Magnaye. Together they had two daughters, Patricia Lou Varpness and Natalia Varpness. They reside in Newton, Kan. Jerry was a kind, caring, hardworking man. He enjoyed doing carpentry work and in his free time vacationing with his family in Las Vegas, Nev. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all.

Jerry is survived by his wife: Mary Lou Varpness of Newton, Kan.; children: Patricia Lou Varpness of Newton, Natalia Varpness of Newton, Stacy (Jenny) Varpness of Cottonwood, Sherry (Pete) Wyffels of Watkins, Shannon Varpness of Cottonwood, Shawn (Casey) Varpness of Rochester and Stephanie Varpness of Chancellor, S.D.; mother: Marion Varpness of Clarkfield; brother: Wesley (Becky) Varpness of Canby; sister-in-law Carol Varpness; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; as well as other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father: Delmar Varpness; brothers: Duane Varpness and David Varpness; and grandson: Blake Wyffels.
