He died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017, at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby.

Larry Goodmanson was born June 27, 1943, in LeMars, Iowa, to Ernest and Helen Lucille (Miller) Goodmanson. He grew up in Ireton, Iowa, where his father was the town barber and his mother taught at the country school. He was the youngest of six children (Kenny, Lyle, Norma, Glenda and Marylu) and was by all accounts lovingly spoiled by his siblings following the death of his mother at an early age. Larry was an active young man who enjoyed sports of all kinds, a passion that continued well into his adult life.

In his junior year of high school, Ireton merged with nearby Hawarden, Iowa, and he began attending West Sioux High School, where he met Kathy Busch. The 1961 Falcon yearbook described a picture of Larry and Kathy as “our modern-day Romeo and Juliet.” The couple graduated from West Sioux in May of 1961 and were married on Dec. 31, they enjoyed 56 years of marriage.

Larry earned his degree in pharmacy from South Dakota State University and moved his young family to Marshall, where he worked for Gag’s Drug. In 1975 they purchased Dick’s Rexall Drug and began a 26-year ownership of Larry’s Rexall in Canby. Larry set a constant example of service and compassion for his family and those around him; countless trips were made to the store after hours for medication and prescriptions were given to those in need despite ability to pay. He was generous with his time and his money and will be remembered for his loyal and compassionate spirit.

Larry enjoyed fishing, golfing, and bowling; many a story has been shared about his exploits with friends and family over the years! He lived each of his 74 years to the fullest and cherished each day spent with those he loved. Family was very important to Larry; he loved his children and grandchildren immensely and was very proud of each of them.

Larry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathy; son, Tim and partner, Michael Sasse of New York City; daughters, Renee and husband Jeff Wolf of Moorhead and Valerie and husband Rikk Wassmer of Rochester; grandsons, Adam (Leah) Wolf, Tyler Wolf and Carter Wolf; sisters, Norma (John) Van Oosbree, Glenda (Fred) Asher, and Marylu (Bob) Baxter. They will continue to celebrate Larry’s life along with dozens of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Lucille Goodmanson; daughters, Cynthia and Kimberly; brothers, Kenny and Lyle Goodmanson; and brothers and sisters in law, John Van Oosbree, Helen Goodmanson and Shirley Goodmanson.

May his memory live on in the compassion and generosity of others.
