Upon graduation, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam for three years. He was a member of the St. Michael Roman Catholic Church while living in Milroy. He regularly donated his time in maintaining the St. Michael Cemetery while farming in Milroy. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a private for communications in the U.S. Army. He was an active member of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings.
