Two injured in Hwy. 59/14 crash

GARVIN — Two people — including a Balaton teen — were injured in a crash involving a semi truck and a car at the intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 14 Monday.

Trevor Daniel Smith, 17, was transported to the Sanford Sioux Falls hospital, the Minnesota State Patrol said. A Louisiana man was taken to Sanford Tracy with non life-threatening injuries.

The crash was reported at 3:43 p.m. A 2024 Freightliner semi driven by Arthur Watts, 49, of Thibodaux, La., was southbound on Highway 59, and a 2012 Chevy Malibu driven by Smith was westbound on Highway 14 at the time of the crash, the State Patrol said. The vehicles made contact at the intersection, the State Patrol reported.

The Balaton Fire Department, Garvin Rescue, Tracy Ambulance and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office all responded at the crash scene, the State Patrol said.
