Early-morning fire destroys Balaton home

BALATON – No one was injured, but a home was destroyed in a fire reported at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday on the 300 block of South Mound Avenue, said Balaton Fire Chief Troy Wendland.

Four people were inside the home at the time of the fire, and “they all made it out safely,” Wendland said.

There was heavy fire damage on the third floor, smoke and fire damage on the second floor and water damage on the first floor and in the basement, Wendland said.

The fire is not being considered a suspicious incident, but the state fire marshal is on the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.

Wendland said the Red Cross has been contacted and is assisting the residents with basic necessities. He said the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, Balaton Ambulance, Garvin Fire Department, Russell Fire Department and the Tracy Fire Department assisted at the scene.
