Administration eases limits on coal plants

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday weakened limits on mercury and other toxic emissions from coal-fired power plants. The announcement was made at a large coal plant in Kentucky. Limits on mercury and other toxic emissions were first put in place by the Obama administration, which cut mercury pollution by roughly 90%. The Biden administration tightened them further. Industry groups say tougher rules make plants too costly and hurt grid reliability. The EPA says looser rules should save hundreds of millions of dollars. Environmental groups warn the rollback will harm children’s brain development and adult health.
