Search for the Brown University shooter resumes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities are again searching for the person seen on video walking away from the Brown University shooting that killed two students and injured nine. Officials said late Sunday that they released a person of interest they had detained earlier in the day, finding no reason to keep him in custody. This setback leaves law enforcement without a known suspect. The shooting happened Saturday during a busy time on campus, causing chaos and a lockdown. The gunman fired more than 40 rounds inside a classroom. Brown canceled all remaining classes and exams for the semester. Officials aren’t recommending another shelter-in-place order despite the renewed search.

4 charged with plotting New Year’s Eve attacks in Southern California, prosecutors say

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Federal authorities have announced the arrests of four alleged members of an extremist group suspected of planning coordinated bombing attacks in Southern California. The arrests took place last week in the desert east of Los Angeles. According to a federal criminal complaint, the suspects were preparing to test improvised explosive devices for planned bombings. They are members of an offshoot of a pro-Palestinian group called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. The group allegedly plotted to set off a series of bombings on New Year’s Eve and target ICE agents and vehicles.

Brian Walshe found guilty of murdering his wife, who disappeared nearly 3 years ago

BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts man has been found guilty of murdering his wife, who has never been found after she disappeared nearly three years ago. Brian Walshe was convicted of first-degree murder Monday after pleading guilty last month to lesser charges of misleading police and illegally disposing of her body. Investigators relied on online searches Walshe made about dismemberment and disposing of a body. Surveillance also showed a man resembling him throwing heavy trash bags into a dumpster. Prosecutors showed photos of many items recovered that were connected to Ana Walshe, including her vaccination card.

Man who tried to assassinate Trump on golf course requests attorney for sentencing

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A man convicted of trying to assassinate President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course last year has decided to use an attorney during the sentencing phase instead of representing himself as he did for most of the trial. The sentencing hearing for Ryan Routh in Fort Pierce, Florida, was pushed back from this week to early February after he requested and was granted an attorney to represent him during the sentencing and appeal phases of the trial. The federal courtroom erupted into chaos in September shortly after jurors found Routh guilty on all counts, including attempting to kill a presidential candidate and several firearm-related charges. Routh tried to stab himself in the neck with a pen, and officers quickly dragged him out. The pen Routh used was flexible to prevent people in custody from using it as a weapon.
