Death toll from attack at Michigan church stays at 4 after police sweep charred ruins

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities in Michigan say search crews did not find any additional bodies inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel where a former Marine opened fire and set the building ablaze, killing four people. Police had feared they would find more victims in the charred wreckage but now believe everyone is accounted for after Sunday’s attack. Investigators are focusing on what motivated the former Marine to ram his pickup truck into the church in Grand Blanc Township. The suspect was killed while exchanging gunfire with two officers. Eight other people were treated at a hospital, including five with gunshot wounds.

Lawyer for suspect in Kirk killing wants more time to review ‘voluminous’ evidence

PROVO, Utah (AP) — An attorney for the 22-year-old man charged with killing Charlie Kirk has asked a judge for more time to review the large amount of evidence before deciding if the defense will seek a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors have charged Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder. They plan to seek the death penalty. A preliminary hearing would determine if there is enough evidence against Robinson to go forward with a trial. A brief hearing was held Monday in Provo. It was just a few miles from the Utah Valley University campus where the Sept. 10 shooting occurred. The judge set the next hearing for Oct. 30.

Javice sentenced to 7 years in prison for fraudulent $175M sale of financial aid startup

NEW YORK (AP) — The 33-year-old founder of the startup student financial aid company Frank has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison. Charlie Javice was sentenced Monday in Manhattan federal court after her March conviction by a jury on fraud charges. Prosecutors say Javice duped JPMorgan Chase into buying her fledgling company for $175 million by submitting false records that made it seem that Frank had 4 million customers. It actually only served as few as 300,000 students. The jury rejected her defense that JPMorgan made up the fraud allegations because it had buyer’s remorse.
