Trump threatens to take over DC police again over immigration enforcement

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has threatened to federalize Washington, D.C.’s police force again. He suggests this could happen if the city’s mayor refuses to cooperate with immigration enforcement. Trump’s previous emergency order, which took over the local police force, expired last week. Mayor Muriel Bowser has said that the city will not work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Trump claims his intervention improved crime rates, although data shows crime was already falling. The White House has not confirmed if Trump will follow through on his threat. Bowser’s office declined to comment on the situation.

Prosecutors say they’ll ask US Supreme Court to restore conviction in Etan Patz case

NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors say they will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to restore a murder conviction in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz after an appeals court overturned the verdict in July. The Manhattan district attorney’s made the disclosure in a court filing Sunday asking the appeals court to hold off on enforcing its decision in the case of Pedro Hernandez, the former convenience store clerk who became a suspect over 30 years after the New York City first-grader vanished. Prosecutor Stephen Kress said the ruling presents “substantial legal questions” and that the district attorney’s office has now “committed to seek Supreme Court review.” Hernandez opposes the prosecution’s request for more time.

Trump says the US should do away with quarterly earnings reports

(AP) — President Donald Trump wants to do away with the quarterly earnings report. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said securities regulators should stop requiring companies to issue financial reports every three months and instead switch to a six-month reporting period. The SEC has required publicly traded companies to report on a quarterly basis since 1970. Trump asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to examine the three- versus six-month reporting requirement during his first term. No change was made. Last week, the Long Term Stock Exchange said it planned to petition the SEC to do away with the quarterly requirement.

Trump says the US military again targeted a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says the U.S. military again targeted a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela, killing three aboard the vessel. Trump announced the strike in a posting on social media. The strike comes two weeks after another military strike on what the Trump administration says was a drug-carrying speedboat from Venezuela that killed 11. The administration justified the earlier strike as a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs into the United States. But several senators, Democrats and some Republicans, have indicated their dissatisfaction with the administration’s rationale and questioned the legality of the action. There was no immediate comment from the Venezuelan government.
