Trump announces that Space Command is moving from Colorado to Alabama
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has announced that U.S. Space Command will be located in Alabama. It reverses a decision by former President Joe Biden’s administration to keep it in Colorado. This decision ends a four-year battle between the two states over the headquarters, which is a significant boon to the local economy. The decision follows a review by the Defense Department inspector general, which could not determine why Colorado was initially chosen. Huntsville, Alabama, known as Rocket City, has a strong history in space and defense, making it a fitting location. Trump also said the fact that Colorado uses mail-in voting “played a big factor also” in moving the headquarters away from Colorado Springs.
8 killed and 50 wounded in Chicago in dozens of shootings over Labor Day weekend
CHICAGO (AP) — Eight people were killed and 50 others were wounded in dozens of shootings in Chicago over the Labor Day weekend, according to police. Between Friday night and Monday night, a total of 58 people were shot in 37 separate shootings in the nation’s third-largest city, according to preliminary information from police. Most involved one victim, but multiple people were injured in three of the shootings. Most victims were in good or fair condition, but several were listed in serious or critical condition. In a handful of cases, police said a person of interest was being questioned, but in most, no suspect was in custody. Over Labor Day weekend last year, seven people were killed, six of them by gunfire, and more than 20 others were wounded in shootings over the holiday weekend, police said.
Pentagon authorizes up to 600 military lawyers to serve as temporary immigration judges
WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has approved sending up to 600 military lawyers to the Justice Department to serve as temporary immigration judges, according to a memo reviewed by The Associated Press. The military will begin sending groups of 150 attorneys — both military and civilians — to the Justice Department “as soon as practicable” and the military services should have the first round of people identified by next week, according to the memo, dated Aug. 27. The effort comes as the Trump administration cracks down on immigration across the country, ramping up arrests and deportations.
Kraft Heinz undoes blockbuster merger after a decade of changing tastes
NEW YORK (AP) — Kraft Heinz is splitting into two companies a decade after a merger of the brands created one of the biggest food manufacturers on the planet. One of the companies, currently alled Global Taste Elevation Co., will include brands such as Heinz, Philadelphia cream cheese and Kraft Mac & Cheese, Kraft Heinz said Tuesday. The other, currently called North American Grocery Co., will include slower-selling brands like Maxwell House, Oscar Mayer, Kraft Singles and Lunchables. The official names of the two companies will be released later. Kraft Heinz said in May that it was conducting a strategic review of the company, signaling a potential split. It expects the transaction to close in the second half of 2026.
