Philadelphia’s commuters face service cuts

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Commuters and students in Philadelphia say they’re waking up earlier and scrambling to avoid being late as they navigate service reductions by the region’s public transit agency. The cuts took effect this week as the school year begins in Philadelphia, the nation’s sixth-most populous city. It could herald a wave of cuts by major transit agencies around the U.S. as they struggle with rising costs and lagging ridership. Cutbacks are also on the table at transit agencies in Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco and Pittsburgh. In many places, funding hasn’t kept up with inflation while ridership is below pre-pandemic levels after many people had their routines disrupted by COVID-19.

Starting at $3.95/week.
