Appeals court tosses judge’s contempt finding against Trump admin. in prison deportations

WASHINGTON (AP) — A split appeals court panel is tossing out a judge’s contempt finding against President Donald Trump’s administration in a case over deportations to an El Salvador prison. The Friday decision comes after planes carrying Venezuelan migrants landed at the prison even after U.S District Judge James E. Boasberg said in court they must return to the United States. Boasberg had found probable cause to believe Trump administration officials rushed deportees out of the country before they could challenge their removal in court and then willfully disregarded his order. The Republican administration has denied any violation, saying the judge did not specify the return of the planes in his written order.

New lawsuit on Epstein case seeks records of Trump administration communications

WASHINGTON (AP) — A legal organization challenging President Donald Trump’s administration on multiple fronts is suing the Justice Department and the FBI for records detailing their handling of the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation. Friday’s lawsuit by the group Democracy Forward seeks records related to senior administration officials’ communication about Epstein documents and any regarding correspondence between Epstein and Trump. Since Epstein’s 2019 death in a New York jail cell as he awaited trial, conservative conspiracists have stoked theories about what information investigators gathered on the wealthy financier and who knew about his sexual abuse of teenage girls. The Republican president denies prior knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and says he cut off their relationship long ago.

Boar’s Head plans to reopen troubled deli meat plant

(AP) — The Boar’s Head deli meat plant at the heart of last year’s deadly food poisoning outbreak is set to reopen in the coming months, company officials said. But recent inspections at Boar’s Head sites in three states documented sanitation problems similar to those that led to the listeria contamination that killed 10 people and sickened dozens. The Jarratt, Virginia, plant was shut down in September when U.S. Agriculture Department officials suspended operations and withdrew the federal marks of inspection required to operate, saying the company “failed to maintain sanitary conditions.” Boar’s Head permanently stopped making liverwurst and recalled more than 7 million pounds of deli products. USDA officials this week said they had “thoroughly reviewed” the plant and lifted the forced suspension on July 18.
