Wildfires force evacuations at Grand Canyon and Black Canyon of the Gunnison parks

JACOB LAKE, Ariz. (AP) — Visitors and staff at two national parks in the U.S. West have been evacuated because of wildfires. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, about 260 mile southwest of Denver, closed Thursday morning after lighting sparked blazes on both rims, the park said. The wildfire on the South Rim has burned 2.5 square miles, with no containment of the perimeter. The conditions there have been ripe for wildfire with hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds and dry vegetation, the park said, adding that weather will remain a concern Friday. The Grand Canyon’s North Rim in Arizona also closed Thursday because of a wildfire on adjacent Bureau of Land Management land near Jacob Lake.

Son of ‘El Chapo’ pleads guilty in US drug trafficking case

CHICAGO (AP) — A son of notorious Mexican drug kingpin “El Chapo” pleaded guilty Friday to U.S. drug trafficking charges. He is the first of El Chapo’s sons to enter a plea deal. Prosecutors allege Ovidio Guzman Lopez and his brother, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, ran a faction of the Sinaloa cartel. They became known locally as the “Chapitos,” or “little Chapos,” and federal authorities in 2023 described the operation as a massive effort to send “staggering” quantities of fentanyl into the U.S. Ovidio Guzman Lopez pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, money laundering and firearms charges tied to his leadership role in the cartel. He agreed to postpone his sentencing to a later court date.

Judge scolds DOJ for ‘refusal’ to detail deportation plans for Abrego Garcia

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A federal judge in Maryland has scolded the Trump administration for its “utter refusal” to detail deportation plans for Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The Salvadoran national could be released from a Tennessee jail next week to await trial on human smuggling charges. U.S. officials have said they would immediately try to deport him. His lawyers have asked the judge to prevent his immediate deportation or to at least to pause the proceedings so they can defend him. The Trump administration wrongfully deported Abrego Garcia to El Salvador in March. But under mounting pressure, the administration returned him to the U.S. last month to face the smuggling charges.

Starting at $3.95/week.
