(AP) — A federal judge in New Hampshire issued a ruling Thursday prohibiting President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship from taking effect anywhere in the U.S. Judge Joseph LaPlante issued a preliminary injunction blocking Trump’s order and certified a class action lawsuit including all children who will be affected. The order, which followed an hour-long hearing, included a seven-day stay to allow for appeal. The judge’s decision puts the birthright citizenship issue on a fast track to return to the Supreme Court. The justices could be asked to rule whether the order complies with their decision last month that limited judges’ authority to issue nationwide injunctions.

All 31 workers reach safety after collapse inside Los Angeles industrial tunnel

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Fire Department says 31 construction workers are safely out of an industrial tunnel that partially collapsed Wednesday evening. The workers were as much as 6 miles inside from the only entrance and 400 feet underground. Some had to scramble over a tall mound of loose soil and debris to squeeze out. Rescuers helped pull some out, and they were shuttled to the entrance and hoisted out. Paramedics were evaluating 27 of the workers and officials say none had major injuries. The nearly $700 million project will carry treated wastewater 400 feet below ground from across Los Angeles County to the Pacific Ocean.

Man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump wants to represent himself in Fla. case

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — A man charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump says he wants to fire his lawyers and represent himself. Ryan Routh asked a federal judge in court Thursday to let him serve as his own attorney. U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon questioned Routh for about 30 minutes but did not rule during the hearing. Cannon said she will issue a written order later. Prosecutors have said Routh plotted to kill Trump for weeks before aiming a rifle through shrubbery as Trump played golf in September at his West Palm Beach country club. Routh has pleaded not guilty.

Ford recalls over 850,000 cars in the

US due to potential fuel pump failure

NEW YORK (AP) — Ford is recalling more than 850,000 of its cars across the U.S. because the low-pressure fuel pump inside the vehicles may fail — and potentially cause an engine stall while driving, increasing crash risks. The recall covers a wide range of Ford and Lincoln-branded vehicles made in recent model years. That includes certain Ford Broncos, Explorers and F-150s, as well as Lincoln Aviators and Navigators, documents published this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration note. Ford plans to send out notification letters to affected owners starting July 14, to warn of safety risks related to this potential fuel pump failure. But recall documents note that a remedy is still under development.
