Senate Dems plan to force a vote on resolution for transparency on deportations to El Salvador
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats plan to force a vote in the coming weeks on a resolution to require more transparency from President Donald Trump’s administration about deportations to El Salvador. Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine announced his resolution Thursday. It follows two previous votes on Democratic resolutions challenging Trump’s tariffs. It’s part of a strategy by Democrats to force votes on reversing parts of the Republican president’s agenda. The resolution would force the Trump administration to report to Congress about what steps it’s taking to comply with courts that have determined the U.S. government wrongfully deported immigrants like Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador. Most Republicans have enthusiastically embraced Trump’s border policies.
Driver who killed 4 after hitting Ill. after-school building may have had medical emergency
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The driver of a car that barreled through a building used for a popular after-school camp in central Illinois, killing three children and a teenager, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and may have had a medical emergency, police said Thursday. No decisions have been made on whether to file charges against the 44-year-old driver, said Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly at a news conference. The driver, who was not injured, is not in custody, Kelly said. Evidence that she may have had a medical emergency was “not conclusive” and the investigation is ongoing, Kelly said. The car went off the road Monday, crossing a field and smashing into the side of the building in Chatham used by Youth Needing Other Things Outdoors, also known as YNOT.
Kohl’s ousts CEO Buchanan after investigation into some vendor transactions
(AP) — Kohl’s said it has terminated its new CEO Ashley Buchanan after an investigation determined that he directed the retailer to engage in vendor transactions that involved undisclosed conflicts of interest. Kohl’s named Chairman Michael Bender as interim CEO, effective immediately. In connection with the appointment, Bender will step down as a member of the board’s audit, compensation and nominating and environmental, social and governance committee, according to the retailer’s regulatory filing. The news comes less than four months after Buchanan, who had been previously the CEO of arts and crafts chain Michaels, took over the job on January 15. Buchanan’s appointment marks the third CEO for Kohl’s in three years as the department store struggles to reverse sluggish sales.
Sex assault reports in the US military fell last year, fueled by a big drop in the Army
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new Pentagon report says that the number of sexual assaults reported across the military fell by nearly 4% last year and there was a significant drop in the Army. It’s the second year in a row with a decrease. That reverses a troubling trend that’s plagued the Defense Department for more than a decade. There were 8,195 reported sexual assaults in 2024 involving members of the military, compared with 8,515 in 2023. Defense officials say that while the decline is a good sign, the numbers of reported assaults are still too high and the military needs to do more to get victims to report the often undisclosed crime.
