Militia group member sentenced to 5 years in prison for Capitol riot plot

WASHINGTON (AP) — A militia group member who communicated with other far-right extremists while they stormed the U.S. Capitol has been sentenced to five years in prison. Kentucky electrician Dan Edwin Wilson told U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich that he regrets entering the Capitol that day but said he had “good intentions” on Jan. 6, 2021. Prosecutors say Wilson planned with others for weeks to attack the Capitol and stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. According to prosecutors, Wilson has identified as members of the far-right Oath Keepers extremist group and as a member of the militia-style Gray Ghost Partisan Rangers.

Suspect in fatal shooting arrested after he falls through ceiling of Memphis home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The U.S. Marshals service says a suspect in a fatal shooting in Tennessee was arrested after he fell through the ceiling of a home where he was hiding. Twenty-year-old Deario Wilkerson was arrested Monday in Memphis by a U.S. Marshals Service task force that looks for fugitives in West Tennessee. Authorities say Wilkerson had been charged with first-degree murder and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon in the fatal shooting of Troy Cunningham in Memphis on April 2. The task force had tracked Wilkerson to a Memphis home and surrounded the house. Wilkerson, who was hiding in the attic, was arrested after he fell through the ceiling. He was not hurt.

Donating a kidney is even safer now than long thought, US study shows

WASHINGTON (AP) — People who volunteer to donate a kidney face an even lower risk of death from the operation than doctors have long thought. That’s according to an analysis of 30 years of living kidney donation. Doctors have long estimated that about 3 of every 10,000 living kidney donors may die within three months of surgery. But safety improvements over the last decade mean by 2022, that risk dropped to fewer than 1 death per 10,000 donors. Researchers at NYU Langone Health hope their findings, published Wednesday, will encourage more living donation.

Jury finds ex-politician guilty of murder in 2022 killing of Las Vegas investigative reporter

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A jury in Nevada has found a Democratic former Las Vegas-area politician guilty of murder in the killing of an investigative journalist who wrote articles critical of his conduct in elected office. The verdict was read Wednesday in Clark County District Court. A penalty phase now begins to decide if Robert Telles faces life in prison. He’s been in jail since his arrest several days after Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German was found dead outside his home in September 2022. Prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence against Telles, including DNA tying him to German’s killing. Telles insisted he was “framed” in the case.
