Chicago woman convicted of killing, dismembering landlord

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago woman has been convicted of killing and dismembering her landlord and putting some of victim’s remains inside a freezer in the boarding house where she lived. News outlets report that a Cook County jury convicted 37-year-old Sandra Kolalou late Monday of all the charges she faced, including first-degree murder, dismembering a body, and concealing a homicidal death. Prosecutors said 69-year-old Frances Walker had served Kolalou with an eviction notice before Kolalou killed her and dismembered her in October 2022. She was arrested after Walker’s severed head, arms and legs were discovered inside a kitchen freezer at the home.

UnitedHealth says wide swath of patient files may have been taken

(AP) — UnitedHealth says files with personal information that could cover a “substantial portion of people in America” may have been taken in the cyberattack on its Change Healthcare business. The company said Monday after markets closed that it sees no signs that doctor charts or full medical histories were released after the attack. But it may take several months of analysis before UnitedHealth can identify and notify people who were affected. It has launched a website and call center to answer questions. The company also is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for people affected by the attack.

Woman who crashed into building, killing boy and his sister, arraigned on murder charges

(AP) — A 66-year-old Michigan woman has been arraigned on second-degree murder and other charges after prosecutors say she drunkenly crashed her SUV into a boat club that was hosting a birthday party, killing a boy and his sister and injuring several other people. Marshella Chidester didn’t enter a plea Tuesday to the eight counts she faces in Saturday’s tragic crash at the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County. During a court hearing that was livestreamed, Chidester’s right arm was in a cast from just above the elbow to her fingers. She has been jailed since the crash and the judge set her bond at the $1.5 million prosecutors requested. The crash killed 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 4-year-old brother, Zayn.

New federal rule would bar companies from forcing ‘noncompete’ agreements

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. companies would no longer be able to bar employees from taking jobs with competitors under a rule approved by a federal agency, though the rule is sure to be challenged in court. The Federal Trade Commission voted to ban measures known as noncompete agreements, which bar workers from jumping to or starting competing companies for a prescribed period of time. According to the FTC, 30 million people — roughly one in five workers — are now subject to such restrictions. The Biden administration has taken aim at noncompete measures, which are commonly associated with high-level executives at technology and financial companies but in recent years have also ensnared lower-paid workers, such as security guards and sandwich-shop employees.
