Gunman breaks into Colorado Supreme Court building
DENVER (AP) -- Authorities say a gunman inflicted "extensive damage" to the building housing the Colorado Supreme Court. But investigators do not believe the incident was related to the court's recent ruling removing former President Donald Trump from the ballot. The incident started just after 1 a.m. in a downtown Denver car crash where one driver brandished a handgun. Authorities say the gunman then shot out a window of the Supreme Court building and took a key to the rest of the building from an unarmed security guard. The gunman fired inside the building but was ultimately arrested by Denver police.
Police seek motive in fiery fatal crash in upstate New York
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a man who died after crashing an SUV loaded with gas cans outside an upstate New York concert venue appeared to have been aiming at a pedestrian crossing. But investigators have found no evidence that the crash that killed two ride-share passengers early on New Year's Day was terror-related. Rochester police Chief David Smith told a news conference that the suspect in the crash was tentatively identified as Michael Avery of the Syracuse area. Police say he may have suffered from undiagnosed mental health problems.

JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) -- A lottery player in Michigan has won the $842.4 million Powerball jackpot on the first day of 2024, the first time it has been won on New Year's Day since the game's start in 1992. The winning numbers drawn were: 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and red Powerball: 1. No one had won the Powerball jackpot since mid-October, enabling the prize to grow to the 10th-largest in U.S. history. The $842.4 million payout is for a sole winner who opts for an annuity doled out over 30 years but people usually prefer a lump sum option. For Monday's jackpot this is an estimated $425.2 million.
Appeals court: Cohen can't hold Donald Trump liable for retaliatory imprisonment
NEW YORK (AP) -- An appeals court says Michael Cohen can't hold ex-president Donald Trump, his former boss, liable because he was jailed for what he claimed was retaliation for writing a tell-all memoir. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected Cohen's attempt to revive a lawsuit that a lower-court judge had tossed out. The appeals court said Cohen got relief by getting a judge to order his release from imprisonment to home confinement several weeks after he was abruptly put behind bars in 2020 when the government claimed he violated severe restrictions on his public communications.
