Survey: More people are using CBD products

(AP) — A new survey shows 1 in 5 Americans used CBD in the past year. This is despite a lack of research on the benefits and risks of CBD and other compounds that come from hemp. The survey was done by NORC at the University of Chicago and was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It also found people who live in states where marijuana is illegal are more likely to use delta-8 THC. There is no government regulation of CBD and similar compounds, which are found in lotions, tinctures, candies, vapes and more.

Man convicted in second trial of killing fellow inmate during Nebraska prison riot

WILBER, Neb. (AP) — Following a mistrial in 2018, a Gage County man has been convicted in a second trial of first-degree murder in the killing of a fellow inmate during a 2017 Nebraska state prison riot. Eric Ramos, 33, faces life in prison when he’s sentenced in February, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. A Saline County jury found Ramos guilty Tuesday of killing 31-year-old Michael Galindo — one of two inmates slain during the riot at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. Galindo was found dead in his cell on March 2, 2017, following an uprising by prisoners, and investigators said he had been severely beaten and stabbed 130 times

Judge questions whether legal cases cited by Michael Cohen’s lawyer actually exist

(AP) — A lawyer for Michael Cohen, the fixer-turned-foe of former President Donald Trump, appears to have cited court rulings that do not exist in a legal filing seeking to have Cohen’s post-prison supervision end early, according to a federal judge in New York who is threatening penalties. U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman issued an order Tuesday telling attorney David M. Schwartz to provide by Dec. 19 copies of three rulings Schwartz cited in the motion he filed last month. If the copies cannot be produced, the judge said Schwartz should explain in writing why he should not be sanctioned.

Father of July 4th Illinois parade shooting suspect released early from jail

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — The father of the suspect in a deadly 2022 Fourth of July parade shooting in suburban Chicago has been released early from jail after serving part of a 60-day sentence for sponsoring a firearm application for his son. Robert Crimo Jr. was released Wednesday for good behavior, according to authorities. Crimo Jr. pleaded guilty last month in Lake County court in Waukegan, Illinois, to seven misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct. He originally had been charged with seven felony counts of reckless conduct — one for each person his son, Robert Crimo III, is accused of killing.

Feds move to retry ex-Louisville cop who fired shots in Breonna Taylor raid

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say they intend to retry former Louisville officer Brett Hankison. Last month, a jury deadlocked over charges that he used excessive force the night Breonna Taylor was killed by police in 2020. Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings declared mistrial after the jury deliberated for several days. Hankison fired 10 shots the night of the deadly raid but did not strike anyone. A new trial would be the third attempt to prosecute Hankison. He was acquitted last year on state charges of wanton endangerment.
