3 dead, 15 hospitalized when bus carrying students and truck crash on Ohio highway
ETNA, Ohio (AP) — An emergency official says a charter bus carrying students from a high school was rear-ended by a semi-truck on an Ohio highway, leaving three people dead and 15 others injured. Licking County Emergency Management Agency Director Sean Grady says the charter bus was transporting students from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District in eastern Ohio. There were a total of 57 people onboard. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that people were killed in the crash but declined further comment since they were still notifying the victims’ families. They said 15 of the 18 people taken off the bus were children.
Colorado supermarket shooting suspect pleads not guilty by reason of insanity
BOULDER (AP) — The defendant in a 2021 mass shooting at a Colorado supermarket pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Tuesday, as a judge ruled that the case can move to trial following testimony that the suspect killed eight of his 10 victims in just over a minute using a gun with a high-capacity magazine. Attorneys for Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa entered the plea on his behalf before District Court Judge Ingrid Bakke in Boulder. Clad in an orange and white striped jail uniform, Alissa looked down in court and at times at the judge as she advised him of his rights.
Illegal border crossings into the US drop in Oct. after a 3-month streak of increases
WASHINGTON (AP) — Illegal border crossings from Mexico fell 14% in October from a month earlier, U.S. authorities said Tuesday, ending a three-month streak of big increases. U.S. officials highlighted the resumption of deportation flights to Venezuela on Oct. 18, shortly after Venezuelans replaced Mexicans as the largest nationality appearing at the border. Arrests of Venezuelans plummeted 45% to 29,637 from 54,833, still second only to Mexicans. Arrests for illegal crossings totaled 188,778 for all nationalities in October, down from 218,763 in September, which was the second-highest month on record.
Ex-fundraiser for George Santos pleads guilty to posing as congressional aide
(AP) — A former fundraiser for U.S. Rep. George Santos pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal wire fraud charge, admitting he impersonated a high-ranking congressional aide while raising campaign cash for the embattled New York Republican. Sam Miele was caught soliciting donations in late 2021 under the alias Dan Meyer, who was then chief of staff for Rep. Kevin McCarthy, when the former House speaker was the Republican minority leader, according to Santos. Federal authorities still have not confirmed that Meyer was the aide who Miele impersonated.
Matriarch is charged with arranging her ex-son-in-law’s death
(AP) — The matriarch of a wealthy South Florida family has been arrested on charges that she arranged her ex-son-in-law’s murder. Authorities say 73-year-old Donna Adelson was arrested Monday at Miami International Airport and charged with the 2014 murder of Florida State University law professor Daniel Markel. She had been about to board a flight to Dubai and Vietnam, two countries the U.S. does not have extradition treaties with. Adelson’s son, oral surgeon Charlie Adelson, was convicted last week of paying two hit men to kill Markel.
