Hawaii volcano Kilauea erupts after nearly two months of quiet
HONOLULU (AP) -- Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, began erupting after a two-month pause, displaying glowing lava that is a safe distance from people and structures in a national park on the Big Island. The Hawaii Volcano Observatory said the eruption was observed Sunday afternoon at the summit of Kilauea. The observatory said gases released by the eruption will cause volcanic smog downwind of Kilauea. People living near the park should try to avoid volcanic particles spewed into the air by the eruption, the observatory said.
Sheriff in New Mexico's most populous county rejects governor's gun ban
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- The sheriff in New Mexico's largest metro area vowed Monday not to enforce an emergency order by the governor to temporarily suspend the right to carry firearms in public in and around the city of Albuquerque. "It's unconstitutional, so there's no way we can enforce that order," Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said during a news conference. "This ban does nothing to curb gun violence." Reaction has been swift after Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the order Friday, telling reporters that she expected legal challenges and that state police would handle enforcement.
US sets record for billion-dollar weather disasters in a year
(AP) --The deadly firestorm in Hawaii and Hurricane Idalia's watery storm surge helped push the United States to a record for the number of weather disasters that cost $1 billion or more. And there's still four months to go on what's looking more like a calendar of calamities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Monday that there have been 23 weather extreme events in America that cost at least $1 billion this year through August, eclipsing the year-long record total of 22 set in 2020. So far this year's disasters have cost more than $57.6 billion and claimed at least 253 lives.
Michigan Catholic group wins zoning fight over display of Stations of the Cross
DETROIT (AP) -- A Catholic group will be allowed to post religious displays along a privately owned "prayer trail" depicting the last day of Jesus, after a zoning fight with a local government in southeastern Michigan went all the way to a federal appeals court. The court ruled 3-0 in favor of the group and issued an injunction Monday, saying Genoa Township in Livingston County was likely violating the rights of Missouri-based Catholic Healthcare International, which controls the 40-acre wooded parcel.
Capitol rioter gets 1 hour of community service for each of 279 Marine Civil War casualties
WASHINGTON (AP) -- One of three active-duty Marines who stormed the U.S. Capitol together was sentenced on Monday to probation and 279 hours of community service -- one hour for every Marine who was killed or wounded fighting in the Civil War. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes said she can't fathom why Dodge Hellonen violated his oath to protect the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic" -- and risked his career -- by joining the Jan. 6, 2021, riot that disrupted Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 electoral victory.
