Bear attacks 7-year-old boy in his suburban New York backyard
BEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) -- A black bear attacked a 7-year-old boy outside his family's home in suburban New York, sending the child to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, officials said. The attack happened shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday outside a home in Bedford, about 45 miles northeast of New York City. North Castle Police Chief Peter Simonsen told News 12 Westchester that the child was playing in his backyard with a sibling when the bear attacked. The boy's parents quickly rescued their son, said Simonsen, who called the response "extremely brave."
Shooting outside a residence hall at Alabama A&M campus leaves 2 injured
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- A shooting outside a residence hall at an Alabama college campus that stemmed from a fight has left two people injured, police said. Tuesday's shooting occurred at Alabama A&M University, Huntsville Police Department spokesperson Sydney Martin wrote in an email. Investigators said the shooting was an isolated occurrence, Martin said. Both people had minor injuries, police said. Police do not think anyone else was involved. "This was not an active shooter incident," Martin wrote in the emailed statement.
South Carolina's new all-male highest court reverses course on abortion
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's new all-male Supreme Court reversed course on abortion Wednesday, upholding a ban on most such procedures after about six weeks of pregnancy. The continued erosion of legal abortion access across the U.S. South comes after Republican state lawmakers replaced the lone woman on the court, Justice Kaye Hearn, who reached the state's mandatory retirement age. The 4-1 ruling departs from the court's own decision months earlier striking down a similar ban that the Republican-led Legislature passed in 2021.
Dollar Tree and Family Dollar agree to take steps to improve worker safety
NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. regulators on Wednesday announced a settlement with the company that runs Dollar Tree and Family Dollar aimed at improving worker safety at thousands of the bargain stores across the country. Labor Department officials cited hazards at the stores including blocked exits, unsafe storage of materials, and improper access to fire extinguishers and electrical panels. Under the agreement, the chains operated by Dollar Tree Inc. are required to find the "root causes" of violations that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has repeatedly cited at multiple stores and fix them within two years, the department said.
Man accused of killing 10 at supermarket is competent for trial, prosecutors say
DENVER (AP) -- A Colorado man charged with killing 10 people at a Boulder supermarket in 2021 is competent to proceed toward a trial, prosecutors said Wednesday. The district attorney's office announced Wednesday that experts at the state mental hospital say Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa no longer has a mental disability that prevents him from helping in his defense and can now participate in the court case against him. A judge still must accept their conclusion in order for criminal proceedings to resume, it said in a statement.
