Third fatal crash in 2 days; Monday crash victim ID’d

NEW ULM — A 23-year-old man from North Mankato died in a crash on Highway 14 at mile post 115 in Courtland Township, Nicollet County, on Tuesday, said the Minnesota State Patrol.

The accident, reported at 12:53 p.m., happened as a 2002 Ford Explorer traveling east entered the westbound lane and collided with the victim’s vehicle, a 2002 Chevy Malibu. The Chevy was traveling west.

The road was covered with snow and ice, according to the state patrol.

The Ford driver was treated at Mankato Hospital for a non-life threatening injury, said the state patrol.

The Courtland Fire Department, Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office, Allina Ambulance and the state patrol responded to the crash.

Also Tuesday, the state patrol identified the 17-year-old victim of a fatal accident near Nicollet on Monday.

Jillian Frances Thompson, 17, of St. Peter, was the driver of a 2000 Buick Regal that collided with a 2016 Volvo semi-tractor and trailer driven by John Eugene Mangan, 62, of Detroit Lakes. The accident occurred at 11:21 a.m. on Highway 111, at mile post 4 in Granby Township, Nicollet County. Thompson was southbound and Mangan was northbound when the accident occurred.
