Cottonwood’s water is running smoothly again

The city of Cottonwood’s water main break has been fixed with no adverse effects to city water, according to the city’s Facebook posts.

The city’s water main broke at 5 p.m. Monday on Main Street, said Samantha Judovsky, the administrative assistant for the city.

A Boil Water Advisory was in effect until Thursday afternoon. The Minnesota Department of Health personnel traveled to Cottonwood Wednesday to test the water for any contaminates in the city of Cottonwood. The Minnesota Department of Health has found no contaminates in the city of Cottonwood. The Boil Water Advisory is officially lifted.

The city expressed gratitude for the city maintenance crew comprised of Randy Fenger, Al Olsen and John Nilges. Community residents Steve Alm, David Geihl, Wade Breyfogle, Rick Jereritz, Jaden Selbo and Nathan Paradis assisted as well, Judovsky said.

Brooklyn Center police investigate gas station homicide

BROOKLYN CENTER (AP) — Police in a Minneapolis suburb are investigating a fatal shooting at a gas station.

Officers were called to the Pump N Munch Clark station in Brooklyn Center about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday on a report of shots fired, according to officials.

They found a 45-year-old man in a vehicle with a gunshot wound. Officers and paramedics tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Dattreas Markeal Stewart of Brooklyn Center.

Police said they’re investigating the case as a homicide and it does not appear to be a random shooting. No arrests have been made.

The Brooklyn Center Police Department is being assisted by several agencies, including the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Brooklyn Park Police and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

Father sentenced to 24 years in prison for infant’s death

HASTINGS (AP) — A Burnsville man who killed his infant son has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison.

Michael Herkal, 33, admitted slapping and violently shaking the 13-day-old baby after the child wouldn’t stop crying.

He pleaded guilty Wednesday in the death of Anthony Herkal and was sentenced to 290 months in prison.

Police responded to a report of an infant who wasn’t breathing at a residence in Apple Valley on Aug. 12, 2018. They found the baby without a pulse and turning purple.

The infant was hospitalized with a skull fracture and bleeding on his brain. He died two days later.

DeGrood is new bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls has a new bishop.

Rev. Donald DeGrood was to be introduced Thursday as the successor to Bishop Paul Swain, who submitted his resignation at age 75 last September, per cannon law.
