Buffalo Ridge Chorale to start rehearsals Sept. 27
Rehearsals for the Buffalo Ridge Chorale will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Christ Lutheran Church, Hendricks. The chorale's fall concert, "Twas the Month before Christmas" will be Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Church of St. John Cantius in Wilno. The concert will include small group performances plus audience sing-alongs to favorite holiday tunes. Dr. Anna DeGraff returns as the director. Anna teaches voice at Southwest Minnesota State University and at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota.
The chorale comprises members from roughly a dozen towns located along the Minnesota-South Dakota border. Any individuals with an interest in singing are encouraged to join the group. No auditions are required but a commitment to rehearsals is essential. If interested in joining, contact Donna Kurth, 507-694-1662, dmkurth@frontiernet.net or Nancy Sandro, 605-479-3438, nancysandro@gmail.com. The mission of the chorale is to provide an opportunity for individuals to practice and perform challenging choral music that will be appreciated and enjoyed by singers and audiences alike.
This activity is made possible in part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the SW Minnesota Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
Defendant in fatal Duluth shooting held on $750,000 bond
DULUTH (AP) -- A suspect accused of fatally shooting a man as he stood on a Duluth sidewalk in a group of people is charged with his death.
Authorities said Jamal Jackson approached 31-year-old Scott Pennington and shot him in the face last Saturday. WDIO-TV reported witnesses told police Jackson had bragged about having a gun. Prosecutors say there was no evidence of a dispute between the two and that Jackson was cold and calculated in his actions.
Jackson is charged with second-degree murder. He's being held on $750,000 bail. His public defender, Gerald Wallace, argued for lower bail Thursday, saying the 25-year-old Duluth native and Central High School graduate has a limited criminal history and was employed prior to his arrest.
New Housley campaign ad features NHL Hall of Fame husband
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Republican Karin Housley launched a campaign ad Friday that invokes her husband's hockey celebrity as she tries to close the gap in her race with Democratic U.S. Sen. Tina Smith.
The ad, which is set in a hockey rink, features Housley speaking to the camera about learning the values of "work hard, play fair and do the right thing."
She takes a jab at "career politicians like Tina Smith" who "don't understand our values and just aren't getting anything done." Her husband, NHL Hall of Fame defenseman and Buffalo Sabres coach Phil Housley, then skates up and gives her a fist bump.
The ad will air in the Twin Cities and Rochester TV markets and run digitally statewide, Housley spokesman Jake Schneider said. He said the campaign made an initial 10-day buy of around $300,000 and will likely spend over $1 million on running it.
