Serving up Election Day meals

Grace First Parish holds annual supper in Russell

RUSSELL -- Voters from throughout the region gathered at Grace First Parish for the 130th annual Election Day Dinner on Tuesday evening.

“We started a little earlier tonight with the weather being what it was,” dinner organizer Beth Erdmann said.

The dinner had its origins as an event held by Presbyterian Church members in Russell as a way to gather on a day when people would be coming into town to visit the polls. Today, Grace First Parish members keep up the tradition each year.

On Tuesday, church members served up a full turkey meal, complete with desserts, in the Grace First church basement.

“It’s basically been the same menu. They have strayed and tried ham. They have strayed and tried pork loin. But they always come back to turkey,” Erdmann said. “There’s a lot of folks that come here who’ll vote in a different town and then still come.”

The volunteers also served takeout dinners.

“If someone is still in the field -- now today obviously they’re going to be in the field -- but that way they can take out. They can still have the meal and you know take it out and eat where they wish,” Erdmann said.
