MPS approves roof replacement bid

Roof and building work at MHS, MMS comes to $7.34 million

MARSHALL -- Marshall Public Schools board members voted this week to approve bids for a total $7.34 million roof replacement and building repair project at Marshall High School and Marshall Middle School.

The two-year project is planned to start next summer and would help address issues like recurring leaks at both school buildings. In September, MPS director of operations Tricia Stelter told school board members that the high school's roof has exceeded its life expectancy of 20 years.

At Monday's Marshall School Board meeting, Keri Hacker and Brandon Klukow of Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance, the project manager for the work, presented the bid results for the roof replacement.

Four vendors submitted bids for the project, Klukow said Monday.

"For the most part, we're replacing the majority of the roof areas at the high school, along with some facade repairs on the exterior of the building," he said. "At the middle school, we have a couple different roofs that we are replacing, and more facade repairs on the exterior of the school."

In the bid process, Tremco looked at a combined bid for the high school and middle school work, as well as some other bid options, "Just to kind of see where the numbers would come in at," he said.

The low bidder was Team Craft Roofing, of Salisbury, North Carolina.

"That's kind of their specialty, is larger projects," Klukow said.

Team Craft's base bid for the combined high school and middle school portions of the project came to $6.93 million. With bid alternates adding in more repairs at the middle school, the project cost came to $7.15 million. Factoring in a contingency budget of $185,047, the total project cost would come to about $7.34 million.

The roof replacement project is included in MPS’s long-term facilities maintenance plan. In September, MPS said it planned to issue facilities bonds with a principal amount not to exceed $7.75 million, to finance the roofing projects.

In two separate actions, school board members first voted to accept the bids from Team Craft Roofing, and then to enter into a contract with Team Craft for the roofing project.
