Finstad requests recount

Race decided by 323 votes

GOP Candidate Brad Finstad formally requested a recount following Tuesday night's election where he came up short by 323 votes to DFL Candidate Jake Johnson.

"Thank you to the 326,000 of my fellow southern Minnesotans who turn out to vote on Tuesday," Finstad said. "We will work to ensure that the full process established under state and federal law is followed, so that every vote is counted in an accurate and transparent manner as we move toward a final determination of the results."

The statement comes after Johnson declared victory Wednesday morning.

Johnson received 163,057 votes compared to Finstad's 162,734 votes. The difference of 323 votes was less than a 0.1% margin, making it one of the closest races in the 2026 midterm elections.

Minnesota is not an automatic recount state, requiring Finstad to formally request a recount. However, Finstad does not have to fund the recount, as the law calls for federal election races under a 0.25% margin to be publicly funded.

Finstad has served as the representative for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District since 2022.

He most recently won reelection by a 17 point margin back in 2024.
