MARSHALL -- Voters in the Marshall Public School District selected three candidates to serve on the school board Tuesday.

According to unofficial vote totals reported by the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office, out of six total candidates, Julie Allen, Sara Brink and Nathan Green were in the lead.

The Secretary of State's Office reported that Allen received 3,485 votes in the school board election. Brink, a current school board member, received 3,406 votes. Green received 3,283 votes.

School board candidates Mike Braithwaite, Ashley Pippin, and Bob Prince received 1,723 votes, 1,157 votes, and 1,060 votes, respectively.

MN voters approve funding amendment

Another education-related question facing Minnesota voters this week was whether to pass a state constitutional amendment increasing funding to school districts. The amendment would allow for more money from Minnesota’s permanent school fund to go to schools around the state. The permanent school fund is a trust that supports school districts without raising individual income or property taxes.

The changes made by the constitutional amendment would result in an additional $33 of funding per student at Marshall Public Schools, MPS Superintendent Jeremy Williams said earlier this fall.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, a total of 2,068,081 Minnesota voters said “yes” to the constitutional amendment, for an estimated 72.8% of voters statewide.

Within Lyon County, a total of 7,190 voters said “yes” to the amendment, for about 69% of the vote county-wide. There were 2,999 “no” votes, and an estimated 226 voters left the question blank. For the amendment, blank votes were counted as “no” votes.
