MARSHALL -- There's a busy weekend ahead in Marshall.

Southwest Minnesota State University's annual homecoming celebration will feature events like a parade, a Mustang football game and a free downtown concert. Besides the festivities, there will be other events going on, like the Marshall Gun Show, and a pair of living history tours at the Marshall Cemetery.

Homecoming activities have been going on this week at the SMSU campus, but some of the main events will be Saturday. The day will start out with a 5K and 10K race at the SMSU Track and Field Complex. Alumni reunion events will also be held Saturday, including an alumni meet of the SMSU women's swim and diving team at 10 a.m. in the Dan Palm Natatorium.

The SMSU homecoming parade will take place on campus again this year, starting at noon. The parade route will start on State Street, continuing along Wefald Drive and Birch Street toward the Schwan Regional Event Center.

After the parade, Mustang fans are invited to celebrate homecoming with the Game Day Roundup and tailgating, which will include inflatables, food trucks, music and more. The Mustang football game against the University of Minnesota Duluth will kick off at 3 p.m.

A new homecoming event this year will be a free outdoor concert in downtown Marshall. The band Junk FM will be performing, starting at 7 p.m. on Third Street downtown.

Cemetery walk in Marshall

Area residents will be sharing some of the stories that shaped Marshall's history this weekend with a pair of cemetery tours and a talk by author and historian Adrian Lee. The Marshall Cemetery Association, the Marshall-Lyon County Library, the Lyon County Museum and the Marshall Area Stage Company are all working together to present "The People of Marshall's History Come to Life."

Presenters will give visitors a glimpse of what life was like for historical figures who are buried at the Marshall Cemetery. Lee will also talk about the symbolism around the cemetery.

The cemetery walks will be at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Marshall Cemetery on North Bruce Street. In between the two walks, Lee will hold an author talk at the Marshall-Lyon County Library.

Gun show

The Marshall Gun Show is returning to town this weekend, featuring items like new and used firearms, ammunition, collectibles and gun accessories. The event will also have concessions available. General admission for the show is $10. The show will run today and Saturday at the Red Baron Arena and Expo. General admissions hours for the event are from 4-8 p.m. Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
