Personal (please list occupation, education and family):
My husband, Darin, and I have called Marshall home for the past 21 years, raising two children who attended Marshall Public Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. I am an alumna of SMSU z or SSU, if I really want to date myself -- with a degree in business finance. I have worked in the financial planning industry for the past 25 years.
Why am I running for a school board seat?
I am running for reelection because I believe strongly in public education and the opportunities it provides. A strong public school system benefits not only our students, but our entire community by helping Marshall remain a strong and thriving place to live. When my family moved here 21 years ago, the quality of the school system was a major reason we chose to make Marshall our home. I also believe in giving back to my community by serving where I can make a meaningful contribution.
During my first term on the school board, I have invested significant time in learning the district's processes, policies, and responsibilities. I would be honored to continue serving and use that knowledge and experience to help our district move forward thoughtfully and responsibly.
What are the major issues facing the District?
One of the most significant issues facing the district is maintaining long-term financial stability. This past year was especially difficult as the district addressed a budget deficit and made necessary reductions following the failed operating referendum. Every decision was challenging because we understood the impact the cuts would have on students, staff, and our community. Although the district is currently operating with a balanced budget, securing adequate and sustainable funding remains an ongoing concern. State and federal mandates continue to place additional responsibilities on the district without always providing the funding needed to fully support them.
What are the areas of concern regarding student achievement in the district?
While we cannot control broader student achievement trends across greater Minnesota, we can focus on meeting the needs of students in our district. We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers and staff who work hard to provide every student with the best education possible. The progress our district has made in reading and math should be recognized and celebrated, while also understanding that there is more work to do. We must continue striving to ensure that every student receives the education and support they deserve, not only to those who are already excelling. Because students learn in different ways, we need to remain flexible in our approach and continue finding meaningful ways to connect with each student, build strong relationships, and keep them engaged and excited about learning. The challenge is recognizing that every student is unique and ensuring our teachers and staff have the resources they need to build meaningful connections with each individual student.
Do you have specific suggestions for improvement?
I would like to encourage more open discussion during board meetings to strengthen transparency and help the public better understand how decisions are made. Board members prepare by reviewing information, asking questions, and seeking clarification before official meetings, and additional discussion also takes place in committee meetings. Because the public does not always hear those conversations, I would like to find thoughtful ways to bring more of that dialogue to the board table and keep our community informed about what is happening in the district.
