Lyon Co. approves feedlot permit

New feedlot to be built in Lyons Township

MARSHALL -- This week, Lyon County Commissioners approved a permit request to build a new 700-head cattle feedlot on land near the intersection of Lyon County Road 5 and County Road 20.

Commissioners heard a request Tuesday from Dylan Anderson for a conditional use permit for a new feedlot located in Lyons Township. Anderson was requesting a permit for a feedlot with 700 animal units, the permit request said.

"This is located on County Road 5 and County Road 20, in the corner here," said Lyon County Planning and Zoning Administrator John Biren. "With the size of the feedlot, it requires a conditional use permit. We held a hearing last Tuesday."

According to the permit request, the feedlot would include a 465-foot by 100-foot barn building with an above-grade concrete floor and two manure storage bunkers. The cattle manure would be applied to fields at least two times a year.

"The feed storage will be on the east side of County Road 5 and they're going to be able to drive straight across," Biren said.

Biren said there were a few people who attended the public hearing for the CUP, but there were no public comments or questions.

"After the meeting we talked to the neighbors and they were there to support it," Biren said. "The Planning Commission developed some stipulations, some conditions, and Dylan Anderson agreed that he could live with those."

Conditions placed on the permit included that the minimum lot size for the feedlot was 5 acres that Anderson had to start construction on the feedlot within a year of permit issuance, and that the feedlot had to follow setback and odor control standards.

Commissioners voted to approve the CUP.
