MARSHALL -- Construction work on Minnesota Highway 19 in Marshall is getting close to completion, but the end of the project will still depend a lot on the weather, a contractor representative said this week.

Erika Coudron, of R and G Construction, said Wednesday that some of the remaining items on the project came down to safety features.

"We're close," she said of progress on the construction.

On Wednesday, workers were preparing to install signs along portions of East College Drive and Coudron said work on flashing beacons at pedestrian crossings was done Monday and Tuesday.

Electrical work at the Bruce Street/College Drive intersection was also scheduled for this week, as was work on an electric vehicle charging station near the intersection.

In a separate project by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, workers were also preparing to plant trees along College Drive. On Wednesday, excavators were at work along the boulevard in the area of Liberty Park in Marshall.

Coudron said road striping crews would be coming in this week for the Highway 19 project. However, their work could be impacted if Marshall gets more rain this week.

Highway 19 (College Drive) has been closed to traffic between Main Street and Bruce Street all this spring and summer. In that time, underground utility has been completed and the road surface rebuilt in concrete. Pedestrian crossings were installed at points along East College Drive, and a new island made the intersection of West Marshall Street and East College Drive into a right-in, right-out intersection.

Reconstruction of Highway 19 (College Drive) within the city of Marshall is planned to end this month, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation's project schedule. However, the schedule does not give a specific end date, and says the October completion will be weather permitting.
