MARSHALL -- The city of Marshall hopes to replace a sewer lift station near East Lyon Street that is over 40 years old.
At Tuesday's Marshall City Council meeting, council members approved a proposal to prepare engineering and bid documents for the lift station project.
The city had received a $35,000 engineering proposal from Bolton & Menk to design bid documents for lift station.
The East Lyon Street lift station handles wastewater in an area that includes Park Side Elementary and Independence Park, according to city council agenda materials at Tuesday's council meeting.
"The station was constructed in 1984 out of a prefabricated steel can-type structure with submersible pumps," said Marshall Wastewater Superintendent Scott Przybilla. "The can itself and the controls are original to the station, and have reached the end of their service life, along with the pumps at this point."
Przybilla said the city plans to build a new concrete structure for the lift station and install new pumps and a control panel.
"With the new control panel, we will install fiber communications at the station," he said.
The fiber optic lines will connect the control panel to computer systems at the city wastewater treatment plant. The system will allow city staff to monitor the lift station.
Marshall Public Works Director Jason Anderson said Marshall Municipal Utilities would handle the fiber optic line installation.
The lift station project is included in Marshall's 2027 capital improvement plan, Przybilla said.
"We would like to get the design and bidding documents ready to bid late this year or early next year," he said. "We feel we will get the most favorable bids from contractors if we get this out early."
Bolton & Menk's proposal to prepare bidding documents for the lift station replacement was for an amount not to exceed $35,000. Agenda packet materials at Tuesday's council meeting said there was $60,000 in the 2026 wastewater budget for engineering services.
Bolton & Menk's engineering proposal, which was included in agenda packet documents for Tuesday's council meeting, also had a cost estimate table for the lift station project. Including project management and contingency costs, they estimated the lift station project would cost a total of about $686,000.
Council members voted to approve the engineering proposal.
