MARSHALL -- For Steve Her, owning a Corvette sports car is living the American Dream.

"It’s an American icon," Her said. He is the founder of the Minnesota Hmong Corvette club, which has chapters nationwide.

The club was invited to the United Hmong Southwest Minnesota New Year celebration held at the Red Baron Arena on Saturday. Her acted as honoree master of the ribbon cutting for the event. More than 20 of the 70 members of the St. Paul chapter traveled as a group in their Corvettes to Marshall for the celebration. The group just returned from a two-week California trip.

Her explained that he always wanted to own a Corvette as far back as in college.

"I always dreamed of owning a Corvette. Ever since my junior senior year in college, I said, ‘OK, someday I’m gonna get a Corvette,’" Her said.

He owns a 1980s C4 Corvette and a high-power C7 Z06.

Jack Vang is the media relations representative for the club who also traveled with the group.

"When you were young, you wanted sports car. But now, as you get older, the Corvette is a car that you want to be in. That’s how we all got here," Her said.

Her said the club formed in 2018 after he retired as a police officer.

"We each kind of like the car. It’s an American icon. We like the car, so we bought it. And now, once we have more, we said OK, let’s form a club," he said. "So now it’s getting bigger ... we are now nationwide. We have California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and of course Minnesota."
