MARSHALL -- City and school board elections are coming up in November. This week, a couple of area communities are giving members of the public a chance to hear from candidates for city offices like city council members, as well as school board candidates.
A candidates' forum is being held in Marshall on Thursday evening at the Marshall area YMCA. The city of Walnut Grove will also be holding a meet-and-greet event with mayor and city council candidates tonight.
In Marshall, two different candidate forums will be held Thursday at the YMCA. Members of local news media will be moderating the forum, and taking questions submitted by the audience. The first panel, from 6-6:45 p.m., will include candidates for Marshall School Board. From 6:45-7:15, candidates for Marshall City Council will hold a forum.
A total of three seats on the Marshall School Board are up for election this year. Six candidates have filed for the seats. In addition to incumbent candidate Sara Brink, candidates Julie Allen, Mike Braithwaite, Nathan Green, Ashley Pippin and Bob Prince are all running for school board.
This year, there will be a total of four seats on the Marshall City Council up for election. One seat is up for election in each of Marshall's three voting wards, and there is a special election in Ward 2 to fill a vacancy left when council member Amanda Schwartz stepped down from her seat due to a move.
Eric DeGroot is the one candidate who filed in the Ward 2 special election. Council races in Ward 2 and Ward 3 are also uncontested. Council member See Moua-Leske is running for re-election in Ward 2, and council member Craig Schafer is running for re-election in Ward 3.
The one contested Marshall City Council race is in Ward 1, where challenger Larry Magrath is running against incumbent council member John Alcorn.
